Meet The Team

Sam Howard
Founder/President
I’m Samantha “Sam” Howard—founder of Panther Pride Athletics, longtime teacher, and fierce advocate for neurodiverse kids and their families. For the past 14 years I’ve taught both general education and special education, and I now work as an autism consultant with districts across Minnesota. Panther Pride started as a tiny idea in my own classroom—simple, joyful ways to make sports truly accessible. That little pilot turned into a bigger dream, and here we are: community-based programs where kids 5–13 can play, belong, and shine. I’m lucky to be cheered on (and often coached alongside) by my wife, Amber, and our two favorite sideline supporters—daughter, Joey (6) and son, Howie (2). Whether it’s basketball or soccer in the fall, skating in the spring, or softball in the summer, my goal is the same: remove barriers, celebrate strengths, and make sure every child feels part of the team.

Desirae Gillis
Vice President
My name is Desirae Gillis, and I am an educator with a deep passion for helping all children learn, grow, and thrive. For over 20 years, I’ve served as an elementary educator in a variety of roles; from classroom teacher and science specialist to academic coach modeling best practices to ensure every student’s needs are met. Today, I continue that mission as an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas, where I help prepare future teachers to create inclusive and engaging classrooms.
My greatest supporters are my husband, Pete, and our two sons, Efram (13) and Jonas (10), who can often be found cheering from the sidelines or helping me prep classroom materials. My passion has always been to ensure that every child feels valued, supported, and able to be their best self in a safe, welcoming environment.
I’m honored to be part of Panther Pride, helping to carry out its vision of making sure every child regardless of ability feels like they are truly part of the team.

Adam Goehner
Treasurer
My name is Adam Goehner and I am a high-school mathematics teacher at Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, MN with 22 years of teaching experience. I live in Blaine with my wife Katie and daughter Anne. My daughter Paige is a freshman at the University of Minnesota. Anne was diagnosed with ASD shortly after her second birthday, and her experience, and the challenges she faces, is why I’m so passionate, and honored, to be involved with Panther Pride.

Jody Wenum
Secretary
I’m Jody Wenum, an experienced educator with over 30 years of dedication to teaching and supporting learners from early childhood through 4th grade in both Texas and Minnesota. My work is grounded in the belief that every child brings unique strengths, backgrounds, and perspectives to each and every learning experience. I am passionate about creating supportive and inclusive environments where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their fullest potential. I’m thrilled to be part of Panther Pride Athletics and look forward to watching our community grow—celebrating diversity, fostering understanding, embracing the joy of being together, having fun, and learning new skills.
I’m fortunate to share this journey with my very supportive husband Scott, who enjoys joining in the excitement. Along with our friends, students, and families, he provides the inspiration and guidance that keeps me passionate about this meaningful work.
